A Heart for Special Olympics – Heather Risk

special olympics signSpecial Olympics has always been a large part and influence in my life.  I have been involved in Special Olympics since 1980 and had the privilege to attend World Games in Ireland in 2003 to compete in the 9 hole alternate shot event with my Special Olympic athlete partner Teri Shock.  What an amazing event!  123 countries represented with 10,000  athletes and partners.  October brings State Golf games for Arizona at Vistal Golf Course where Teri and I compete in our 9 hole alternate shot event.  Special Olympic partner Ian Rezabek and I started playing in the Special Olympic Friendship League in 2013.  This traveling league has a mix of athletes and partners from all over Arizona with 56 people participating in the most recent event at my home course, Oak Creek Country Club.  What a fun day!  I also coach Special Olympic softball, since 2001, competing in the Arizona Special Olympic Summer Games, with swimming and bocce competing at the same time.  Opening ceremonies at Surprise Stadium is always so uplifting!  I truly enjoy participating and being a part of Special Olympics!!
