Junior Golf With Suzie Fisher – by Kristie Fowler

After graduating High School in Coffs Harbour, Australia, Suzie Fisher moved to the United States to pursue a career in golf. She played four years at The University of Tulsa, graduating in 2004 with a degree in Exercise Sports Science.  While playing The Australian LPGA and U.S. Futures Tours she had a lot of success.  In addition, her biggest achievement was winning the 2000 Australian Amateur Championship at Royal Sydney Golf Club. She took these experiences, turned her focus and now is having very successful Junior Golf Programs in Oklahoma.

Suzie FisherSuzie, a Top 50 U.S. Kids Golf Coach, is the Director of Instruction at The Golf Club of Oklahoma. Her teaching philosophy is based around “everyone is unique and requires to be treated that way”.  She teaches students at all levels from beginners to the Club Champion.  She is responsible for all Junior Programs and Ladies Clinics but she specializes in teaching juniors ages 4-14.

Suzie likes to get the parents involved in junior golf as well. She encourages them to participate in the parent orientation they can take on the TPI Junior Curriculum website, complete the PCA and read Daddy Caddy.  As the U.S. Kids Local Tour Director for Oklahoma City she encourages those parents to get involved as well.  Whether the parents are shuttling the kids on a difficult walking course, bringing our drinking water or giving words of encouragement, she believes a positive involvement with parents is crucial to keeping the kids involved in golf.

She likes to incorporate fun and creativity into her programs, offering different types of games as well as competition where kids have a chance to win U.S. Kids golf balls. Every third week they have a tournament on the course with modified tees so the kids have an opportunity to see what making a birdie, par and bogey feels like.  Her favorite session is winter golf where they meet in the evening to spend an hour, half on golf practice and the other half on golf workout where they are developing club head speed in the off season.

Suzie continues to learn and better herself. In addition to being a Class A LPGA T&CP Member, she is TPI Level 2 Junior and Level 2 Golf Coach.  She constantly searches for ways to add fun to her programs.  The most important mission of her junior program is to get the kids to love golf just as much as she does.  It is more important to her to introduce the game of a lifetime to all the kids than create a world champion.  The growth of junior golf is her major priority and she is doing a wonderful job of it.  Way to go Suzie!  Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work!
