A wonderful time was had by all at the Central Section Meet and Greet held recently during the LPGA Tour Founders Cup in Phoenix, Arizona. Members from Florida, Arizona, and California met in the Pioneer Pavilion to enjoy drinks and appetizers while networking and visiting with one another. We were honored to have LPGA Founder and Western Section T&CP member Shirley Spork join us during the event, and share information about her upcoming charity Pro-Am in California at Palm Valley Country Club. Other members present were Peggy Gustafson, Sue Wieger, Lynn Marriott, Pia Nillson, Gwen Checho, Kiernan Schindler, Ashley Moss, Marvol Barnard, Le Ann Finger, and other members from several sections around the country.
A surprise special guest was noted teacher Mike Malaska, who dropped by to say hello and share ideas with our members. All told, we had about 15 LPGA members in attendance, and a great time was had by all!
I would like to congratulate all the Section of the Year nominees and honorees. It is an honor to be nominated for consideration for these special awards and, in my opinion, all are winners.
Let’s all set some goals for the upcoming season for both professional and personal growth. Please consider hosting or attending a Meet and Greet, Play Day and/or workshop. The more we can interact and share ideas with each other the stronger our organization can be.
The Marilynn Smith 7th Annual Scholarship Tournament will be played on Monday, November 16, 2015 at Pebblecreek CC in Goodyear, Az. LPGA Hall of Famer Nancy Lopez will be this years’ Honoree Chairperson. This event was begun by LPGA Founder Marilynn Smith in Dallas, Texas and has continued on in Arizona where Ms. Smith now resides. The Marilynn Smith Scholarship is awarded to high school seniors who will be playing golf at the collegiate level. Twenty $5,000 scholarships were awarded in 2014 to the most highly qualified candidates.
Peggy Gustafson has found a way to be creative with her lessons this summer in Alaska. Every Friday evening they run a Beer, Burger & Bucket event on the range. $15 for a burger grilled at the tee, cold beverage and a large bucket of balls. Fitting carts, demos and an ES14 launch monitor are all available from 5-8 p.m. Non golfers come out just for the food but are intrigued by other programs like Get Ready for Golf, Wine & Cheese Putting and Date Night. She also offers late night (from 8-11 p.m.) Short Game Boot Camps working first with fundamentals on the range then on course for honing in their skills. Stay creative Peggy! It’s working!
March was a busy month in Arizona. Thank you to all the Professionals who donated their time to teach in the Volvik Lesson Zone and the LPGA Girls Golf Club at the Founders Event. Several pros worked two, three and four two-hour shifts to help grow the game and the LPGA T&CP brand. True Rock Stars!
I would also like to thank Sue Wieger and Brian Heppler for sharing the Tathata Golf Experience by hosting a meet and greet at their beautiful facilities in Scottsdale. Very enlightening for all participants.
